National Hispanic Veterans Advocacy Network (NHVAN): WHAT WE DO AND WHY

NHVAN’s mission is to provide culturally competent advocacy for the health and human services needs of U.S. Hispanic military veterans.

NHVAN’s vision is to create a well-established, organized, active, and strongly connected community of Hispanic veterans by improving communication and advocacy for their health and human services needs that is culturally appropriate.

WHAT WE DO AND WHY:

  • Bilingual, culturally appropriate multi-platform advocacy campaign
  • Culturally appropriate online materials, publications, resources and events
  • Evidence-based empirical research approach
  • Highlight health and human services issues affecting Hispanic veterans from a culturally appropriate perspective

  • Spotlight unique challenges, needs, and stories of Hispanic veterans

  • Spotlight Hispanic military personnel and military-serving organizations
  • Assemble and disseminate critical legislative, government, and military initiatives
  • Legislative Days with representatives to advocate for health and human services needs
  • Town Hall meetings with community stakeholders, including health and human services professionals, to educate and raise awareness

About the Military

U.S. Military 101 The "Basics" of the United States Military Reserve members fall within one of the four main branches of the military: Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Navy. Each branch has a group of reserves, but only the Air Force and Army attain a National Guard. In times of conflict and war, the President can call to duty all members of the reserves, but requires state approval for activation of the National Guard.
