Female Vets Feeling Better About VA Care

Air Force veteran Audrey May, 45 of Wilson, N.C. discusses pain she is having in her left leg after a recent surgery to Brenda Hall, LPN at the Durham VA hospital Wednesday June 6, 2012. Women make up 14 percent of the active-duty military and 8 percent of the U.S. veteran population. Though they’re less likely than men to have seen combat, they have similar rates of PTSD and other mental health issues in addition to their other heathcare needs. VA hospitals, where women once had to share rooms with male veterans, are trying now to take better care of women vets.

About the Military

U.S. Military 101 The "Basics" of the United States Military Reserve members fall within one of the four main branches of the military: Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Navy. Each branch has a group of reserves, but only the Air Force and Army attain a National Guard. In times of conflict and war, the President can call to duty all members of the reserves, but requires state approval for activation of the National Guard.
