As we celebrate Memorial Day, we honor the lives of our fallen soldiers, our many veterans and those who are still fighting to keep this country free. One special veteran comes to mind, and this is his story: His name was Arthur (Art for short), and he served his country in the Navy. The son of a farmer who knew the value of hard work early, he joined the Navy just before his 18th birthday in 1950 and a day after his high school graduation. During his time in the Navy, he served on the USS Batfish from 1957 to 1960 and was on ship during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the naval blockade around Cuba. He would retire from the Navy and the Pentagon only to continue his service to his country by volunteering for the Fleet Reserve Association and other service organizations until the end of his life early this month.
